Lumi's Launching a New Album & We Had to Get Inside Their Heads About It

Fashion scene

Lumi

If you haven't heard yet, Lumi is releasing "The Night Was a Liar", an entirely new album they will perform live in concert this Sunday April 30 at KED.

Lumi are a two-piece alternative electronic rock band from Beirut, Lebanon, with Marc Codsi on synths and drum machines & Mayaline Hage on vocals and guitar.

We got to listen to the album (yes we did!) and we genuinely think it's their best work so far. It's more relatable and approachable than their previous music - well at least to us, being people whose music library is not heavy on alternative rock. It made the music all the more special because it really did resonate.

All excitement in tow, we sent over some interview questions to the band to try and get inside their head about the album - ones you really won't read anywhere else.

But before we get to their answers, here's some more info about the album as well as the music video to their first single, "My Love" (which we think is a stunning piece of art we would loop on a big projection at a house party).

The Night Was a Liar

"The Night Was A Liar" (Studio Keeward, 2017) is the band’s sophomore album. It is the conclusion of years of exploration, characterised by a mix of heavy electro beats paired with airy rock riffs and vocals that are spread out across lengthy progressive tracks.

The album is constructed to tell a story, the story of Beirut, of the band. A story both intensely personal and universal. Its construction is that of a fable, starting with the birth of a character (Raised in Fire) who is unleashed into modern society. He/She has to learn to break free from the evils of society to follow his/her dreams and find love.

The first single: "My Love"

"My Love" is the album's first single and first music video to drop. Watch it and get entranced, get obsessed with that tune, with that imagery that can truly make you disconnect from whatever reality you're in.

The Interview

Doing this interview was pretty fun. We came up with the questions with the intention of poking beyond the surface. As you'll see, the best part was getting their answers.

1. The Night Was a Liar in 3 words:

"Awaking, Embracing and Taking action."

2. Most memorable moment of making this album:

"I'm not sure! Maybe one time when the electricity went off while we were playing and all of the sudden everything (the music) seamed so clear, like it made so much sense. Our recording experience in Montreal was very particular as well, it was human and rich, lots of little encounters and lots of music of course. It was all very natural in a way.."

3. More afraid of the dark, or more afraid of the light?

"...more afraid of the dark, now that I met the light."

4. To be lied to or to lie to?

"Neither! Both make me very uncomfortable, but I kind of really don't like being lied to."

5. One thing that keeps you awake at night

"Fast heartbeats - followed by unnecessarily haunting thoughts."

6. Making music is:

"Vital, profound, an anchor - as well as a journey."

7. Fully naked on stage, or fully-armed on stage?

"Fully potent on stage!"

8. One thing/person that you couldn't have made the album without:

"Marc Codsi :)."

9. Fashion is the:

"..I don't know, so many more fundamental things are happening in the world, it feels indecent even talk about it."

10. To be conscious or to dream?

"To dance in between both, I don't see them as opposites...not anymore."

2. Most memorable moment of making this album:

"Just waking up every morning to take a bus to go to a beautiful studio to record music with great people. That's happiness right there."

3. More afraid of the dark, or more afraid of the light?

"In the dark you might fall, and in the light you might burn, I guess burning is more frightening because it's harder to stop."

4. To be lied to or to lie to?

"To be lied to, much more comfortable."

5. One thing that keeps you awake at night

"In the silence you can hear the echo."

6. Making music is:

"Just an excuse to avoid working at an office."

7. Fully naked on stage, or fully-armed on stage?

"Armed with lots of machinery that will one day take their revenge."

8. One thing/person that you couldn't have made the album without:

"Many many people, and the vacuity of life."

9. Fashion is the:

"Easy way to stand out."

10. To be conscious or to dream?

"It has been proven that for a brain, dreams have the same validity as reality. So let's dream and call it reality. Or let's live it all and call it a dream."
